OB Nurse recognized with DAISY Award at Ozarks Healthcare
Ozarks Healthcare recently recognized Savannah McCune, registered nurse (RN) in Ozarks Healthcare’s Obstetrics (OB) Department with the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award. McCune was awarded The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses for the level of compassionate care she provided to a mother and her newborn during delivery. The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
McCune was nominated to receive a DAISY Award by Gretchen Sansegraw, who recently delivered her newborn at Ozarks Healthcare’s Women’s Center. Sansegraw wanted to recognize McCune for keeping her calm and making the delivery process a special experience for her and her family:
“When I discovered I would be having a C-section, I was very nervous and scared,” Sansegraw said. “Savannah held my hand and promised she would take care of me. SHE DID! She literally had me laughing while I was on the operating table. She took photos of the first moments of my son’s life, and that was incredibly special for my husband and I. Post-op, she never left my side until she knew I was okay and so was my baby … She helped me feel like a human being again after a long and tiring labor and delivery. She was an incredible support through the entire process, and I will forever have love and respect in my heart for her!”
Sansegraw and her family, along with some of Ozarks Healthcare’s staff surprised McCune with the presentation of her DAISY Award last week.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
